Kris,

What area are you looking for? There are some books out that deal with
that issue in Canada. One is called " RESISTANCE AND RENEWAL-Surviving
the Indian Residential School" by Celia Haig-Brown. This book deals
specifically with the Kamloops Indian Residential School in British
Columbia. This book looks at education in this school from different
points in the school's history. It was published in 1993 so it is recent.

Also, there is another book called " Growing Up Native American" which
covers many more areas in the U.S. and Canada. It is edited by Patricia
Riley and includes many Native authors recalling their childhood and
boarding school experience. The time period is 19th century to about the
1980's I believe. It was published in 1993 also. I found this book a good
reference. Included in this book is Basil Johnson who was a student at
"The Spanish" a Indian Boarding School in Ontario. Students at this school
were reduced to being called by a number...Basil Johnson was number 41 at
Spanish, and talks about how this affected him....
