Throughout the past year Northwest Indian College has been building a
teacher education program which focuses on the educational needs and
issues of tribal communities. The program is now established in
collaboration with Washington State University. A visionary director is
sought who can guide the program to its next level of success.

TEACHER EDUCATION DIRECTOR Northwest Indian College
and Washington State University Joint Appointment
Position
Two partner Institutions of Higher Learning are seeking qualified
applicants for a joint position in Teacher Education housed in Bellingham
Washington at the Northwest Indian College. The individual selected will
assume an administrative position at Northwest Indian College and a
faculty position at Washington State University. The appointment will be
effective May 15, 1997 or until filled. Screening will begin April 1,
1997. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. This
joint position and the project it reflects is designed to increase the
number of American Indian teachers in tribal and public schools.
Responsibilities
The faculty member is expected to be responsible for:
.teacher education program development
.supervision of faculty and
educational leadership
.oversee the acquisition of books and journals for
the NWIC library related to teacher education
.assume the major role in the recruitment and retention
of faculty for the program
.evaluate program goals and progress to meet those goals
.attend conferences and present information and data
about American Indian teacher education
Qualifications
These include:
.earned doctorate in educational foundations, cross-
cultural education, educational leadership, or related
fields required
.knowledge of and experience in elementary teacher
education preparation programs preferred
.expertise in the educational issues and problems of
indigenous peoples needed
.experience with and development of strong working
partnership between institutions of higher learning
required
.grant writing success for program support and expansion
preferred
.experience with databasing and research in issues related to
Indian education helpful
.scholarly activity or creative production
desirable; teaching and/or administrative experience equally
desirable
Special Parameters
Two cultures are working together to increase the
number of Indian teachers in schools. A person aware of tribal educational
issues with an understanding of operations and procedures within a tribal
college and a university system is sought.
