TOOLS IN THE TOOLBOX -- ACADEMIC RESOURCES TO SUPPORT
SUCCESSFUL DEVELOPMENT IN AMERICAN INDIAN EDUCATION

A Panel Presentation and Open Forum
Sponsored by the Western Social Science Association - American Indian
Studies Section and the Native American faculty of the University of New
Mexico's College of Education.

WHERE: Hilton Hotel, Albuquerque, NM -- Colorado Room
WHEN: Saturday, April 26, 1997, 9:45 to 1:30

In connection with the 39th Annual Conference of the Western Social
Science Association, the American Indian Studies Section of WSSA and the
Native American faculty of the University of New Mexico College of
Education have collaborated to present a two part workshop. The workshop
will explore the relationship between university level scholars and
community based American Indian educators in developing and supporting
effective and culturally appropriate education of American Indian students
in both state and federally funded schools.

A panel presentation from 9:45 am to 11:15 am will explore the many
aspects of American Indian educational development, particularly as that
development impacts the nation-building agendas of American Indian nations
and their communities. How can and should university-based educators and
scholars share at the tribal, community and school level what we are
learning about curriculum, education leadership, the guiding role of
policy, the interplay of linguistics, culture and learning styles? What
should American Indian tribes, communities and school-based educators ask
from the university in this important aspect of local development?

Panelists include Professors Anita Pfeiffer, Joseph Suina, Mary Jiron
Belgarde and Gregory Cajete from the University of New Mexico College of
Education. The panel is facilitated by Rosemary Ann Blanchard, graduate
student in Educational Policy Studies at the University of Illinois
College of Education, formerly a member of the faculty of the University
of New Mexico Gallup Campus.

The panel will be followed by an Open Forum from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm.
Teachers, students, including college students, tribal representatives,
community school representatives are invited to dialogue with the panel and
with each other on the role of the university and university educators in
supporting Native community educational development.

Light refreshments will be available during the open forum.

NO REGISTRATION FEE TO ATTEND THIS WORKSHOP.
