From: Rick Hesch, Director, Winnipeg Education Centre (B. Ed. program).
This is an informal but official notice, informing anyone out there
who may be interested and qualified that a term position will be
opening at our program for a person to teach in the area of Sciences
and Math. We are a teacher education program, a program of the
University of Manitoba, which recruits and trains (some would insist
"educates") residents of inner city Winnipeg to become certified
teachers. We share our building in the North-East corner of Wpg's
"inner city" with a Social Work Education building with the same basic
mission.
Especially since I have assumed the position of Director last
July, we have been focusing on strengthening our program's content and
style so that it more closely responds the cultural backgrounds and
interests of our students (50% or more [depending on the year]) of our
students are indigenous people. Now we are in a position to hire a
new member of our small (4) academic staff (part of an increase to 6),
who would teach in the above-mentioned academic area(s). Someone who
is interested in the field of "ethnomathematics", for example, would
suit us ideally. Again, the position will be for only one academic
year, with a possibility of renewal. In the future, I hope and expect
to be able to offer three-year contingent appointments.
This is not the most coherent of job postings, as I am writing as I
think. However, you should also be aware that: (a) the above-mentioned
reference to Math notwithstanding, if your primary expertise is Science
but you can teach basic Math, we would also be very interested.
Conversely, if your focus is Math but you can "do" Science, your chances
would be enhanced; (b) We strive to have the balance of our student
composition consist of 25% immigrant and/or political refugees and 25%
non-aboriginal naturally born Canadian, in other words White; (c) our
program is designed as an affirmative action program in more than one
way. Thus, we prefer students who are on the borderline between finding
university work insurmountable, given their current skill levels, and
succeeding readily at university; (d) remuneration for the year will be
in the vicinity of $C50,000.00. (e) you would be expected to teach
approximately 12 credit hours of courses and engage in field supervision
of student teachers, as well as carry out some service and research
work. More details can be provided if you have read this far and are
still interested.
