My concern, after reading some REALLY BAD ideas about how an "expert"
cooks acorn Yurok style, is whether or not the information he or she
would be including in this collection of recipes would be likely to be
accurate... I would hope they will be tested
thoroughly, though this would require dedication to accuracy that most
writers don't appear to possess (yeah, I'll probably get yelled at for
that last comment). There are some good native american recipes out
there, but they are often complex (find one healthy moose, marinade loin
slabs for 2 days in cranberry juice, and cook in earth oven for 12 hours
.... can you imagine checking out whether or not it works?). For the
Strawberry Festival up at Point Reyes they bring in a backhoe to dig the
pit, which is considerably easier than what most people have to go thru.
(By the way, while the above "recipe" was just 'made up' by me, it
certainly has potential since the acidic nature of cranberries would have
much the same effect of marinading/polluting the meat in red wine. The
main difference is that tanic acid causes severe health problems, albeit
temporary, for many people, while cranberry juice has no "obvious" negative
aspects, and helps prevent cystitis. The other obvious negative effect of
red wine is that many of "us" have personal rules about "no alcohol allowed
on the premises". Why am I mentioning wine? I saw it listed once in an
alledged "Indian" recipe for buffalo stew. Since wine is clearly a "foreign"
influence item, and against our traditional teachings, it is highly unlikely
that it would be included in a REAL Native recipe.
