Greg:
I'm writing from the national office of the First Nations Confederacy of
Cultural Education Centres in Hull, Quebec, Canada. The FNCCEC represents
71 First Nation cultural centres across Canada, most of them located
on-reserve and in the communities, with a few exceptions.
On of those exceptions is the Saskatchewan Indian Cultural Centre (S.I.C.C.)
in Saskatoon. I'm in touch with their President on a regular basis, and I
know that in serving the cultural & educational needs of their
supporting Tribal Councils across the province, one of the things they've
become involved with is a distance education project involving several of
the native languages including Nakota, Lakota, Dakota and others.
I'm not sure if your location falls under the "footprint" of the satellite
that they're broadcasting from, but it's worth looking into. My latest info
from the S.I.C.C. mentioned that they were intending to make the language
courses available on an ongoing basis for remote-area students, so you
would not be limited to having to take a summer course, and could videotape
the televised sessions. I recommend speaking to Ms. Darlene Speidel. You
can reach her at the S.I.C.C. at:
Saskatchewan Indian Cultural Centre
130 - 33rd Street East
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
SN7 4K4
I don't have the telephone number on hand, but if you care to place a
brief call to my office at 1-819-772-2331 we'll be happy to give you the
S.I.C.C. number, or you can call the FNCCEC BBS, leave me a note and
we'll get back to you. The BBS number is 1-819-772-4805.
Good luck with your language lessons!
