Amazing these days Eskimo is not looked on derogetory, but
a word based on it is.. Atleast in the Large Cities of
Anchorage/Fairbanks. The word is 'Skimo.
Generally means a drunking/drugged out eskimo down on 4th/2nd streets.
Other nasty term is Kalutch(sp) It hink it is a athabaskan
word (root?) meaning something, but the modern meaning means
a woman who will sleep with you for booze/drugs/etc..
Sorry all for the negative words, lived to long in Anchorage near
the military bases..Living in Nome is interesting way to get rid of
20 or so years of "prejudice by a group". Eyes opening, but hard to.
These days I don't use the wrods above much. They seem alien and strange
at times, and wonder why I ever used them. Such is growing up and facing
reality.
Its liek the word "Nigger" if a white person uses it, is not very nice.
But if used as "Nigga" by many blacks, it is not nasty.
Atleast black to black (Afro-american/African American)..
I could use it when I was with black friends (the Nigga, as in
Heh Me Nigga) but stillt he stigmatism was there..
Words like Half-Breed and such are not looked down as much as they
once where in my Great-Grandmothers time (she was half indian)..
Never hear breed thou, nicely enough.. Of course living in Nome
where a large part of the population is eskimo, white, mixed ethnics, or
half-breeds (used nicely and not often) (I liek mixed breed if I have to use
a term, but I still remember hearing what my GGmother had to and all, and
I'd rathe not use it....
Sorry for any spelling errors.. Are times changing?
I hope so.. I like kids no matter what ethnic/race they are, they are
all humans.. Adults I'm not sure about..
