Smithsonian languages volume (was "history of American...languages")

There really is supposed to be such a volume some day. (Real Soon Now,
as the programmers say). It's been in the works for 20-odd years. I
hear rumors from contributors that they have been asked to get their
papers in, that the project is actually moving again--which if true
might mean that it will appear in a few years.
