Actually, pidgins or linguas francas may replace indigenous languages.
Modern French was a lingua franca of sort for starting. Swahili is now a
language of its own in eastern Africa.
I doubt such a lingua franca would help preventing amerindian languages
from extinction. Multilinguism would, education also.
Translating textbooks so people could be educated in their own tongue
would certainly help (and create jobs...)
Many English speakers assume that you cannot be educated in any other
language, including French, German, Spanish and so on... They MAY be
wrong...
