In Europe I never found that people spoke any kind of special patois near
the borders. They do learn the basics of the other language, without
altering their own.
Some languages exist on both sides like catalan, French on the italian
border (Val d'Aoste) and, of course, in Belgium and Switzerland.

As of the similarity of roman languages, it is not sufficient for
intercomprehension, at least not anymore.

But that kind of progressive variability can be found in south-east Asia,
if i recall correctly?
