NativeNet back in operation

As of late last night (Wednesday) the NativeNet relay system was restored
to working order. No articles have been lost, as far as I know, so if you
have submitted something in the past couple of days and haven't seen it on
whichever list you sent it to yet, please wait another day or two before
inquiring about it (and if you do want to inquire, your first point of
contact should be Jay Brummett (jay@slcpl.slcpl.lib.ut.us), in the case of
the NATIVE-L and NATCHAT lists, or myself for the others (NAT-LANG, NAT-EDU,
NAT-HLTH, NAT-1492). Speaking of Jay, I haven't heard from him since yes-
terday, so I don't know why no articles have been approved yet today. It
may be that Jay is just busy.

Mary Kuhner (mkkuhner@genetics.washington.edu), who handled moderation
for NATCHAT during the first couple of years of its operation, and for
NATIVE-L for several months, will be helping out with subscription matters,
so if you have a question about your subscription, such as needing to
change your address, or if you're having problems interacting with the
LISTSERV system, please get in touch with Mary.

I'll continue to work behind the scenes, keeping things going, and
making little improvements here and there, to help things run more
smoothly (I hope), as well as exploring new methods for exchanging the
kinds of information and points of view that we've been doing for almost
five years now (in just another month!). I'll also be trying to help
define and launch one or more educational projects. And, as I said
recently, I'd like to write some documentation on how to use the mailing
lists to better advantage for those who have been with us a while, and
to orient new members of our community, so they have no doubts about how
to do relatively simple things, like post articles and retrieve articles
from the "filelist" and "notebook" archives at TAMVM1 and/or INDYCMS.

I'll also be combing through my files to find the names of the various
people who have offered to help in various ways during the past year or
so. Once I get better organized, I hope to resurrect some of the
projects we've talked about in the past, and to tap various of you out
there to plan and carry out the tasks involved in doing some of these
things (like conducting a survey of our readership to get a better
sense of what people want from the lists, creating a bibliographic
database to file the information on books, films, and videos posted by
various people over the past several years, and constructing a subscriber
profile database to enable people who want to learn about others who
share their interests and/or live nearby to themselves - and maybe to
form specialized discussion groups or host informal classes on various
subjects). There's a lot that can be done if there is enough interest
and energy out there (my own energy is finite, but I can help people
get some of these things off the ground).

I guess that's all for now. I think I'm going to have to look into
getting a line conditioner for this machine, since I suspect that my
disk problems have been the result of power spikes or brownouts. (If
anyone knows anything about that subject, and has recommendations,
please drop me a note.)

Off we go again...
