I tried to review the Endangered-Languages-L list yesterday, but could
not do so, because I was not already a member! Lists which insist on a
person's subscribing just to review the membership might consider this:
I'd naturally prefer to review the membership of a club, electronic or
otherwise, before deciding to join. Would the list owners not permit a
person to do that? Personally, I'd be happy to undertake not to reveal
the membership list to anyone else, & only to use it to help me decide
whether it would be worth my while to join. I wish the new list every
success. Could any existing member of Endangered-Languages-L give us
at least a country-by-country breakdown of membership?

[ It is not clear to me why this article is being posted to the NAT-LANG
list, but in any case, I wanted to attach this note to say that in the
case of NAT-LANG and all the other "NativeNet" lists I operate, the
subscriber lists are not open for examination at all - whether one is
a subscriber or not. My own feeling is that such information should be
kept confidential. However, I am working toward an arrangement where
anyone who wants to provide information about the fact of her/his sub-
scription or anything else can do so. This information would be kept
on file and available for examination by anyone who wishes to do so.
(The information would be accessed by means of requests sent via e-mail.)

If anyone has comments about this policy or the subscriber information
archive just mentioned, please let me know. --Gary (gst@gnosys.svle.ma.us) ]
