For a project on 17th-19th century Chickasaw geography:
Would appreciate any leads on early Chickasaw terminology for the area of
western Kentucky and Tennessee known as the Jackson Purchase. I'm
particularly interested in what the Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee, and
Cumberland Rivers were called by the Chickasaw, and whether the Duck and
Elk Rivers were translations of Chickasaw or other Muskhogean terms. All
the documentation I have seen thus far is in European languages or in
modern Chickasaw.
