In our search for immersion videos so far, we've come across the following:
1. Montgomery County Public School District set (11 vids with books)
2. Punana Leo recruiting video (from Hawai'ian Language Nests)
3. "Immersion Teaching Practices" by Michael Berthold (Australian programs)
4. "Making Connections: Planning, Instruction, Assessment" (Ontario, Canada)
5. OISE video (information forthcoming)
Our own video doesn't count yet, as all it consists of to date is roughly 2
minutes of a cow hand-puppet rather unsuccessfully lip-synching the first 20
letters of the Hocak Alphabet! :)
The Montgomery set is geared towards immersion in the public school system,
and explains immersion methods in rather technical terms, though it has
several intro videos which are quite palatable even to non-teachers. The
vids show quite a lot of teacher-student interaction, and we found after
showing them to our teachers this past week that it increased their
confidence in immersion as a teaching method.
The Punana Leo video was their favorite, maybe because as an indigenous
languag revival program it hit a little closer to home. The teachers were
impressed that such tiny children were speaking their own native language.
But most of all, they liked the music! (There's a lot of Hawai'an music in
the video!) This video is about 10 years old now, and there is a new one
almost completed, according to Punana Leo staff we spoke with several weeks
ago. We're looking forward to seeing it.
The last 3 videos we haven't seen yet, but have ordering info on all but the
last one. We should have info on the last one soon.
Well, that's all we've found so far. Many thanks to all who helped point us
toward these videos, and we're eager to add to the list!
Best Wishes from all of us here at the Hocak Wazijaci Language Program.
