The Bilingual Education Department at The College of St. Scholastica in
Duluth, Minnesota would like to announce that there are
Bilingual Teacher Training Program Scholarships available
for Fall 1995.
Bilingual Teacher Training Program
The American Indian Bilingual Teacher Training Program is a four-year
academic program to prepare students for positions in bilingual/
bicultural education. The program is designed so that student
participants, upon graduation from the baccalaureate degree program, will
be certified to teach in the State of Minnesota, will be licensed in
Bilingual/Bicultural Education from the State Department of Education and
will be proficient in both English and Ojibwe as a language for
instruction. St. Scholastica is the only college in Minnesota presently
offering this program.
What is Bilingual Education?
It is the equal use of two languages as mediums for instruction;in this
program the languages are Ojibwe and English.
What is Bicultural Education?
It is the orientation of student to two distinct cultures and the
association of langauge with culture - Ojibwe and English.
What is the ultimate goal of the Bilingual Teacher Training Program?
The program will train teachers who will teach a child to function
successfully in either of two langauges and cultures, and to shift from
one to the other as they choose or the occasion demands.
Eligibility
A prospective student must have a high school diploma or GED to be
accepted at The College of St. Scholastica. S/he must also apply for
acceptance into the Bilingual Teacher Training Program by filling out an
application and attending a personal interview with program staff. The
program is looking for students with strong academic abilities and a
commitment to work in Indian Education. There are no blood quantum or
tribal requirement to be accepted into the program. Only students who
wish to be considered for scholarships and stipends need to apply to the
Bilingual Program.
Program
The Bilingual Teacher Training Program is a four-year academic program.
To graduate, a student must:
-complete a minimum of 192 quarter credits
-major in Elementary or Secondary Education
-complete coursework in Bilingual Education
-achieve Ojibwe Language proficiency
-satisfactorily complete all coursework (cumulative GPA 2.8)
-complete student teaching
Once these requirements are met a student will receive licensure from
the State of Minnesota in Elementary or Secondary Education, K-12
licensure in Bilingual/Bicultural Education, and is eligible to teach in
any school system in Minnesota and most other states (licensure
requirements vary) in the Midwest.
Financial Aid
A student accepted in the Bilingual Program will receive the following
(based on the availability of funding):
-partial funding for tuition and fees
-$250 book allowance per year
-$325 per month stipend for living expenses
Students are also eligible to apply for other financial aid such as:
-Minnesota State Grant
-Tribal Scholarship
-College Student Employment
-St. Scholastica Scholarships
-State Indian Scholarship
-Child Care Subsidies
