NativeNet: purpose of each list, posting procedures

I'd like to remind everyone about the purpose of each of the NativeNet
lists. NATIVE-L is for posting informational articles and questions,
not for carrying on discussions. In looking through the queue of
articles waiting to be approved, I see a number of articles talking
about subjects such as "The Way West" series that aired recently on
PBS. These articles are perfectly appropriate for NATCHAT, but not
for NATIVE-L. In fact, NATCHAT was created to offload conversations
from NATIVE-L, in order that NATIVE-L could be used for purely infor-
mational purposes. NAT-LANG is for information and discussion of the
languages of aboriginal peoples, NAT-EDU is for educational matters,
NAT-HLTH is for health issues, and NAT-1492 (now largely dormant) is
for matters pertaining to the 500th anniversary of the "voyage of
discovery" of Christopher Columbus (from the perspective of aboriginal
peoples).

The posting addresses for each of the lists are as follows:

list preferred address secondary address
native-l native-l@gnosys.svle.ma.us native-l@tamvm1.tamu.edu
natchat natchat@gnosys.svle.ma.us natchat@tamvm1.tamu.edu
nat-1492 nat-1492@gnosys.svle.ma.us nat-1492@tamvm1.tamu.edu
nat-edu nat-edu@gnosys.svle.ma.us nat-edu@indycms.iupui.edu
nat-hlth nat-hlth@gnosys.svle.ma.us nat-hlth@tamvm1.tamu.edu
nat-lang nat-lang@gnosys.svle.ma.us nat-lang@tamvm1.tamu.edu

Unlike other LISTSERV-based mailing lists with which you may be familiar,
the NativeNet lists are controlled from a machine ("gnosys") other than
the machines ("TAMVM1" and "INDYCMS") on which the LISTSERV software is
installed. In order to execute administrative functions (e.g. subscribing
and unsubscribing) on the lists, you must use the LISTSERV addresses
("listserv@tamvm1.tamu.edu" and "listserv@indycms.iupui.edu"). However,
the secondary addresses automatically forward to the preferred addresses
on gnosys, which is the primary control node for the lists, so it is a
bit better to use the primary addresses for posting articles.

Please note that if you reply to any article you receive from one of the
lists, your message will be sent to the posting address for that same
list, *NOT TO THE AUTHOR OF THE ARTICLE TO WHICH YOU ARE RESPONDING.*
If you want to reply to the person who has written a previous article,
you must use the address that appears in the "Original Sender:" line at
the start of the message text of the article.
