Catawba language speakers

Does anyone know if Red Thunder Cloud, whose death was the source of a
piece on All Things Considered on 1/27/96, was in fact the last known
native speaker of Catawba? Noah Adams hedged on the issue in the
broadcast due to conflicting information from NPR's research staff, and
rumor has it that the New York Times may revise its obituary of Red
Thunder Cloud to reflect this doubt.
