Has anyone checked here?:

Catawba Nation

Mr. Gilbert Blue
Chief Catawba Nation
1480 Hopewell Road
Rock Hill, SC 29706

(803) 324-0677.

Perhaps Mr. Blue might have an answer to this question.

These are the 2 states where there could still be speakers:

Rock Hill, northern South Carolina

Stewart, Utah

In 1975 there were 10 or fewer speakers (Ruhlen) out of population of 500,
according to the Ethnologue Database at:

http://www-ala.doc.ic.ac.uk/~rap/Ethnologue/eth.cgi/USA/CHC

Since this data is over 20 years old, then unfortunately, the story could very
well be true.
