I'm getting really facinated with this topic of Russell Means'
civil disobedience. It's very interesting (to me as an anti-
racist white woman) that people (white) are a million times more
threatened and critical of an Indian spilling some blood on a
statue in an act of Civil Disobedience than they would be if it
were a white peace activist spilling blood on the Pentagon steps.
I think it is because his act was so completely "on target".
Indians protesting Columbus, I think raise the same feaars in
North American whites that Black s raise in white South African's
when they protest apartied. Fundamentally, white americans know
we live on stolen land. Somewhere deep inside I wonder If many of
us aren';t afraid we'll have to give it back. If all promises
were kept, all treaties honored, most of us would be living
"under" Indian rule.
Personally I would much rather be living with a governmant
with a constitution which retained the matrilineal structure of
the orininal Iroquios constitution rather than its pale imitation,
the US constitution. It seems highly unlikely that this will
come to be... but history takes strange turns.
