[ This article, from Deb Gagnon, contains a personal message sent to her
a month ago by Rick Burgess. Those of you who were following the dis-
cussion at that time may recall that there was a bit of a debate about
an article posted by Deb that Rick criticized. --Gary ]

Gary, I've been remiss in not forwarding this apology from Rick Burgess
regarding the misunderstanding resulting from my posting the article by Tim
Giago heavily criticizing In_The_Spirit_of_Crazy_Horse....thought the
network would like to see the apology sent to me from Rick....thanks, Deb

[ While I'm at it, I should mention that Rick Burgess is no longer Rick
Burgess, and offer my own semi-apology for not forwarding an article
I received from him several weeks ago which announced that he had
legally changed his name to Xeno Whitenack. I'll append the explan-
atory article to the end of this posting. --Gary ]

Please feel free to post this, with or without your own comments attached:

I apologize for my blatant error in format and perception for taking opinions
which you posted for the net as yours and not as that of those of the Newspaper
and journalist cited in the article. It's very clear to me now that I was
mistaken, and I make no criticisms in format or form of your posting. My
criticism in terms of the article itself, however, still remains firm, and
I believe my original posting is still quite valid as long as the attribution
is switched from yourself to those whose opinions were represented, that is
Tim Giago, and possibly the National Catholic Reporter.

Furthermore, I do appreciate seeing postings like this for the very reason that
they are real people's opinions and as such are worth discussion and criticism.

Finally, I never wish to shoot the messenger, but, if the messenger has the
same opinion as the message, I think is valuable to put the criticism to the
live messenger as opposed to merely the possibly unreachable original source.
People who are made to think and justify their own opinions are likely to
think more critically of them themselves I should think, and for that reason,
to the extent that you or others feel comfortable doing so, I like to see
your opinions about what you post. This doesn't mean, however, that I in
any way feel you should be obligated to do so, and I'd hope you'd feel free
to do exactly as you did again if that is your preference. Sincerely, and
I hope not too convoludedly, Rick Burgess.

Subject: Rick Burgess Legally has changed his name to Xeno Whitenack...

As of yesterday, I legally changed my name with King County Court in Downtown
Seattle to Xeno Whitenack (Used to be Rick Burgess). Because of family
reasons I had been planning to change it to something for a long time, but
during the war last winter, when I was getting an ulcer over the fact that
over 80 per cent of the U.S. ruled public was apparently for the war, I decided
to make my first name Xeno, (xenos in Greek means stranger) which is taken in
English to be a prefix meaning stranger or foreigner. Hence I was and will
always be against that war as well as against a lot of other things the "public"
as defined by this government, is and does. The last name "Whitenack" was that
of my mother's father, who I have admired since I was in my teens, and who
unlike those on my father's side of my family always seemed to have unbigoted
compassion towards people he met, and fostered that attitude in those around
him.

An important point to make here is that my name is not Zeno, which is that of
an ancient Stoic philosopher who I do not identify with at all, nor do I wish
to be equated with him.

Finally, my computer accounts will soon all have the username xeno (I decided
xwhitenack was too long and cumbersome and hope that xeno is adequately unique)
so that my Internet address should now be: xeno@austen.u.washington.edu, or
xeno@milton.u.washington.edu, which will forward to the former.
