The U.S. Government came to the Western Shoshone Nation and
made a Treaty of "Peace and Friendship". The Treaty allowed for the
U.S. Immigrants to pass through our homeland, the U.S. Government
realized that the Treaty did not extinguish the Western Shoshone
Title to our Sacred Mother Earth.
In order to undermine the Western Shoshone Nation the U.S.
started to treat the Western Shoshone as non-humans and classified
as animals and yet to this day the Western Shoshone are considered
by the U.S. Government to be under the Department of Interior along
with the rocks, trees, birds, fish, and other kinds of plant life.
The U.S. is using the ICC as an excuse to steal our land
and they ignore the 1863 Treaty of Ruby Valley. The U.S. has never
produced any documents that extinguished Western Shoshone land
title or land rights.
Mary and Carrie Dann have informed the Court and the U.S.
that we are Western Shoshone citizens, and they have no jurisdiction
over us according to our laws.
What we're telling you is that our Mother Earth is not for
sale not now, not tomorrow, or not ever.
The most powerful nation in the world is now trying through
its courts system to destroy our way of life, our culture, and our
birth rights.
What does that say to the world? We say this is disgraceful.
Is this what the U.S. is showing the world on human rights? They have
the guts to criticize other nations of the world for their treatment
of their people. We too have human rights!!!
We ask the American people to tell your government to justify
all the wrongs committed by your government against the Western Shoshone
Nation, so that your children can walk with dignity with all the nations
of the world.
Statement from the Western Shoshone National Council
The Western Shoshone land rights and aboriginal title issue.
This morning the WSNC presented a motion to the U.S. Federal
District Court here in Reno, NV to intervene in the case known as U.S.
v. Dann.
The WSNC has made this move to protect the Dann as well as
other Western Shoshone cattlemen who are directly affected by the
ruling in this case.
In the motion to intervene, the WSNC cited various U.S. laws
that the U.S. Government failed to address in this case. The WSNC states
that due process and the rule of law has not been followed by the U.S.
Government in U.S. v. Dann.
The U.S. entered into a Treaty of Peace and Friendship in 1863
with the Western Shoshone Nation. This is the only official act that has
taken place between the two nations.
The Western Shoshone Nation has upheld all the provisions of the
Treaty. The U.S. has not upheld the Treaty from the very beginning. During
the course of this litigation the U.S. has failed to present facts that
determined termination of Western Shoshone title.
This issue must be resolved. The WSNC is willing to enter into
good faith negotiations with the U.S. and considered this the best
approach to take to resolve this long standing issue. The WSNC now calls
upon the U.S. to enter into government to government negotiations
(presidential Indian Policy Statement, October 30, 1988) with the Western
Shoshone Nation.
