The Spring-Summer 1991 issue of "The Turtle Quarterly" published by the
Native American Center for the Living Arts Inc., 25 Rainbow Mall, Niagara
Falls NY 14303 (4 issues $10 US, $15 Canadian single $3 US/ $4.25 Canadian
has an article on the development of Indian stereotypes in publications
and on film -- "Savage Splendor: Sex, Lies and Stereotypes" by Richard Hill
curator of the Institute of American Indian Arts Museum. The article draws
on his many years of research. He presents strong arguments as to why
Indian stereotypes remain as the predominant remanents of a racist
American society and why the remain so imbedded in American popular
culture.
