A YEN FOR PEACEFUL SOLUTIONS

Japan's Ambassador to Canada, His Excellency MICHIO MIZOGUCHI, has
agreed to meet tomorrow with members of the Calgary-based
environmental group The Northern Lights.

A Calgary newspaper reported Thursday that the organization had
threatened to disrupt the ambassador's speech to the Calgary
Chamber of Commerce to protest development of Japanese paper mills
in northern Alberta.

Northern Lights is registered with the Alberta Environmental
Network as a non-profit group concerned primarily with the
preservation of wilderness and wildlife.

It is hoped that this formal meeting will prevent any embarrassing
disruptions of the ambassador's official visit to Alberta, which
included last night's gala Midsummer Jubilee Ball at the Banff
Springs Hotel.

Part 2 of 2 to follow...
