TK> Lubicon Lake Nation members were to appear in court in Peace River,
TK> Alberta on Monday April 29, charged with Possession of Explosives,
TK> Arson, Disguise with Intent, and Mischief. They each face up to 50
TK> years in prison.
While I don't condone this kind of action generally, thinking that there
may be a "better" way of doing things, sometimes what has to be done has to
be done. Regarding the Disguise with Intent, I would venture to guess that
the majority of the politicians in Ottawa would be guilty of this.
TK> Lumber. Last November 8, the Lubicon Lake Indian Nation gave
TK> notice that all developments in unceded Lubicon territory would
TK> have to obtain operating permits from the Nation and comply with
TK> Lubicon environmental and wildlife protection regulations.
TK> Companies which failed to do so would be subject to removal without
TK> further notice. To date, Buchanan, Brewster, and numerous oil
TK> companies have failed to comply.
Sounds fair to me. Like the old saying goes, "When in Rome........"
TK> The Friends of the Lubicon (Toronto) has condemned "the use of the
TK> Canadian judicial system as a weapon against the Lubicon lands and
TK> people", demanding that all the charges be dropped against Lubicon
TK> Nation members on the basis that Canadian courts and police have no
TK> current jurisdiction on unceded Lubicon territories and on the
TK> basis that Buchanan Lumber is operating illegally without Lubicon
TK> Nation permits within unceded Lubicon territory.
There's that Double Standard beast rearing its ugly head again. That old
line about being free to do what we tell you comes to mind. Jeez, I'm sure
in a sarcastic mood this morning. But then, with stuff like this going on,
spleen-venting is fast becoming a favourite past-time.
Take care.
