The 7th European Meeting of North American Indian Support Groups
July, 15 - 20th 1991, Stadtroda, Thuringia, Germany
Resolution in support of the San Carlos Apache affected by a planned
construction of a telescope complex on Mount Graham
WHEREAS a consortium, consisting of University of Arizona, Max-Planck-
Institute (Germany), Arceti Observatory and the Vatican plan the
construction of a observatory complex on Mount Grahama, Arizona;
AND WHEREAS major institutions, among them the Smithsonian Institute,
have already withdrawn from above consortium;
AND WHEREAS Mount Graham is a sacred site for the Apache people with
crucial religious significance and construction of said telescope will
desecrate the whole mountain range;
NOW THEREFORE we, the participants of the 7th European Meeting of
North American Indian Support Groups, representing Austria, Belgium,
Canada, Czechoslovakia, France, Germany, Italy, Luxemburg, the
Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United
States and various aboriginal nations and organizations, do hereby
demand from the University of Arizona Consortium, consisting of above
institutions, an immediate stop of construction works on Mount Graham
and moving of the said telescope project to another site without impact
on Native spirituality and the environment.
