The 7th European Meeting of North American Indian Support Groups

Resolution on the Mohawk Nation of Kahnawake and Kanesatake
WHEREAS lands traditionally inhabited by the Mohawk people was never
ceded or given up in treaties;
AND WHEREAS the Mohawk Nation has always remained its independence and
has never given up its sovereignty;
AND WHEREAS the heavily armed attack on the Mohawk people on July 11,
1990, displayed a serious disregard towards the sovereignty of the
Mohawk Nation;
AND WHEREAS Mulroney's decision of sending the army forces into Mohawk
land was an obvious breach of the Canadian Constitution requesting the
parliament's approval in such a case
AND WHEREAS in the course of the siege of Kahnawake and Kanesatake the
treatment of the Mohawk people by Canadian and Quebec police and army
forces was a clear violation of basic human rights as included in the
United Nations Human Rights Charta as stated by the Quebec Human
Rights League and other organizations;
AND WHEREAS Quebec claims to be a distinct society and according to
their opinion rightfully demands therefore a special status, while at
the same time denying this right to the Mohawk Nation;
AND WHEREAS police forces neglected their duty to protect Mohawk men,
women and children against racist attacks from Canadian citizens;
AND WHEREAS Mohawk people defending their sovereignty have been treated
as criminals and have been denounced as a small group of terrorists
acting against the will of their people
AND WHEREAS Kanahwake and Kanesatake are still besieged by SQ and RCMP
forces;
AND WHEREAS the European Parliament in its resolution on September 13,
1990, recognized the rights of the Mohawk people;
NOW THEREFORE we, the participants of the 7th European Meeting of North
American Indian Support Groups, representing Austria, Belgium, Canada,
Czechoslovakia, France, Germany, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Norway,
Poland, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States and various
aboriginal nations and organizations, do hereby strongly demand
- that all charges against Mohawk people as well as further existing
warrants are dismissed
- the rights of the sovereign Mohawk Nation are recognized
- any plans of extending the golf course to Mohawk lands at Oka must
be stopped
- all police forces have to be removed from reserve lands.
