The 7th European Meeting of North American Indian Support Groups
July, 15 - 20th 1991, Stadtroda, Thuringia, Germany
Resolution on the protection of Ojibwa communities in Wisconsin
WHEREAS members of the Ojibwa Nation of Northern Wisconsin are
continuing to suffer from racist abuse and racist attacks by, among
others, members of Stop Treaty Abuse and Protect Americans' Rights and
Resources, while pursuing their right to spearfish;
AND WHEREAS this right is guaranteed by treaty and has been upheld by
recent decision in the courts;
AND WHEREAS this right was explicitly retained by the Ojibwa Nation as a
condition for the cession of land to white settlers;
AND WHEREAS in pursuit of this right the entire Ojibwa Nation harvests
only 3% of the annual allowable walleye catch in Northern Wisconsin;
FURTHER, WHEREAS the Kennecott corporation and other major mining
interests have indicated their intention to mine uranium in the
immediate vicinity of Ojibwa communities in Northern Wisconsin;
AND WHEREAS exploratory drilling for uranium, which has already been
undertaken, has had a devastating impact on local wildlife;
AND WHEREAS uranium mining has proven to cause massively destructive
pollution of water, air and land, with disastrous consequences for
human health, and to produce radioactive waste, for which no adequate
disposal techniques have been developed and which will remain a threat
to public health and to the local ecosystem for tens of thousands of
years;
NOW THEREFORE we, the participants of the 7th European Meeting of North
American Indian Support Groups, representing Austria, Belgium, Canada,
Czechoslovakia, France, Germany, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Norway,
Poland, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States and various
aboriginal nations and organizations, do hereby demand that Governor
Thompson of Wisconsin immediately take measures to ensure the safety
of the Ojibwa people by providing adequate police protection from the
activities of racist organizations and individuals and ensuring a
complete ban on uranium mining in Wisconsin.
