7th European Meeting of North American Indian Support Groups
July 15 - 20th 1991, Stadtroda, Thuringia, Germany
Resolution for WESTERN SHOSHONE LAND RIGHTS
We, the participants of the 7. European Meeting of North American
Indian Support Groups and representatives of 13 European countries,
the USA, Canada, La Hiu Hawaii and various other indigenous nations,
are outraged at the decision of the Federal District Court of Nevada
of June 6th 1991 to remove Western Shoshone cattle in Newe Sogobia.
A livestock reduction of more than 9O% means the destruction of the
livelihood of traditional Western Shoshone and of their way of life.
The Danns who have been fighting for Western Shoshone land and treaty
rights are a precedence to other Shoshone ranchers who might face
the same measure.
We are shocked by the prospect of a government pushing still
self-sufficient native people into welfare dependence. This would be
the ruin of the Western Shoshone Nation. The destruction of the
economic basis of a people is to be regarded as genocide.
This ripp-off is the last act of the United States government's unfair
dealing in one of the longest land rights battles of a Native American
Nation.
The 7. European Meeting of North American Indian Support Groups demands
* that the attempt of removing Western Shoshone cattle be stopped
immediately.
* an investigation of the fraud, manipulation and misconduct in the
Indian Claims Commission and the courts, whose primary concern was to
protect US interests versus land and human rights of indigenous
peoples.
* that the US respect and honor the Treaty of Ruby Valley of 1863,
which is still valid in international law, in accordance with article
6 of the US Constitution "treaties are the supreme law of the land"
* we remind the US of the ongoing UN mandated treaty study,
investigating the 371 ratified treaties between the US government
and native nations.
* we condemn the illegal misuse of Western Shoshone lands for more than
800 nuclear tests and demand the compensation for these indigenous
nuclear guinea pigs.
We unanimously support the Western Shoshone's demand for a fair and
impartial hearing in Congress with international human rights observers
in order to come to a just solution of their land rights issue.
