The 7th European Meeting of North American Indian Support Groups
July, 15 - 20th 1991, Stadtroda, Thuringia, Germany

Resolution on Peabody Coal company mining activies on Navajo and Hopi
land in Arizona

WHEREAS there are several religious sites within the current Peabody
Coal Mine lease on Navajo and Hopi land in Arizona, religious sites
which are irreplaceable once disturbed or distroyed;

AND WHEREAS mining activity is destroying plants used by traditional
medicine men for healing and religious ceremonies, plants which are only
found at certain places as well as other vegetation;

AND WHEREAS coal dust sent into the air by blasting is contaminating
good vegetation and water used by livestock and wildlife;

AND WHEREAS black lung is a common result of contacts with coal dust and
local residents constantly exposed to it are, unlike mining operators
not insured against its effects;

AND WHEREAS chemical contamination of water has resulted in the death of
livestock;

AND WHEREAS garbage and trash are left behind on the land by security
personnel;

AND WHEREAS local residents have been intimidated by mining employees;

AND WHEREAS the planned reclamation of land has not yet occured;

AND WHEREAS Navajo residents in the Forest Lake area of Arizona are
therefore calling for an end to mining activity by the Peabody Coal
company;

NOW THEREFORE we, the participants of the 7th European Meeting of North
American Indian Support Groups, representing Austria, Belgium, Canada,
Czechoslovakia, France, Germany, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Norway,
Poland, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States and various
aboriginal nations and organizations, do hereby demand from the Hanson
corporation that it immediately terminate the activities of its
subsidiary, the Peabody Coal company, on Navajo and Hopi land in Arizona.
