The John D. And Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has a special
pot of money just for Indian projects related to the
Quincentenary. Most of the "Indigenous Voices" grants will range
from $5,000 to $30,000 with the possibility that some may be for
$50,000 or more. Letters of Inquiry are due SEPTEMBER 30, 1991.

Grants will be to groups who: 1) promote dialogue and
information exchange among the native people of the Americas; and
2) broaden public understanding of the contribution of Indigenous
groups to the history and culture of the Americas. Grants will
be made only in 1991.

Eligible activities will include (but not be limited to):

* National, international and regional conferences of Indigenous
people.
* Regional, national and international meetings called to
develop solutions to problems faced by native people, in such
areas as the environment, health, economic development, and land
tenure.
* Support to new or existing networks of geographically
separated individuals and institutions, Indian and non-Indian to
address one or more specific issues.
* Activities that coordinate the work of Indigenous groups
during 1992 across a region or country, including regional,
national and international meetings and the preparation and
dissemination of newsletters and publications.
* Activities that support the participation of native people in
media activities and to improve the degree and accuracy of media
coverage.

Cost of translation services, in needed, should be included in
proposals for meetings, conferences and written materials.

The Foundation will favor proposals that meet the following
criteria:
* Seek to solve problems faced by native people through the
development of policy or practices.
* Include strong linkages with Indigenous grassroots community
leadership in all phases of project development.
*Support work at a regional, national or international scale;
projects focussing on a single local community will not be
considered.
* Bring together people who do not ordinarily meet, to establish
new partnerships.

Eligible organizations are Indian-led and controlled groups such
as confederations of Indian groups, national and international
organizations of Indigenous people, and native educational and
cultural organizations. Grants will also be made to non-Indian
educational and cultural institutions and to collaborative
projects between Indians and others that reflect significant
Indigenous leadership and control.

Letters of Inquiry are due SEPTEMBER 30, 1991.
