This is a semi-personal message but please forgive me. It will certainly be
of interest to many readers so I ignored my better judgement to post anyway.
Abel Dorris is in critical condition in the Hitchcock Medical Center at
Dartmouth College. Several days ago he was hit by a car while walking along a
country road at 10 a.m. Abel Dorris is the eldest child of Michael Dorris and
Louise Erdrich and the subject of his heart-wrenching book about Fetal Alcohol
Syndrome called The Broken Cord. Readers will be familiar with Erdrich's Love
Medicine, The Beet Queen, Tracks and books of poetry. Michael and Louise just
collaborated on the Crown of Columbus. Abel is a sweet, 22 year old man. I
am sure any show of support for the family (and their 5 other children) would
be greatly appreciated. Thank you for listening and once again excuse the
