Description:
The Coordinator will help initiate the newly-formed
Indigenous Studies Programme Office. The appointee will plan and
develop a programme of study offering a minor in Indigenous
Studies open to students registered in regular degree programmes
throughout the University. The Coordinator will aid in the
recruitment and retention of First Nations, Metis and Inuit
students, faculty, and staff and in developing the University's
awareness of and responsiveness to Indigenous cultures, histories
and aspirations. The Coordinator will assist and advise
First Nations, Metis and Inuit students, coordinate referrals to
existing services, maintain records of available programs,
admission requirements, and scholarships, and assist in
recruitment efforts. The Coordinator will maintain liaison with
First Nations, community, provincial and national organizations,
other universities, and government agencies. The Coordinator
will also serve as an on-campus resource for faculty and
administration in the development of relevant curricula and
special programmes, the preparation of grant proposals, and the
hiring of faculty and staff who are Indigenous peoples. For a
properly qualified candidate, this position can be developed to
include scholarly research and teaching components.
Requirements:
The Coordinator must have strong administrative and
interpersonal skills and a proven ability to develop personal
contacts in both the First Nations and university communities.
The Coordinator must have experience in advising First Nations,
Metis and Inuit students and a clearly demonstrated knowledge of
and sensitivity to issues, cultures, and values of Indigenous
peoples. Knowledge of a First Nations language is a significant
asset. An M.A., or a B.A. with relevant work experience, are
minimum requirements.
Conditions:
This is a full-time fixed-term appointment. The initial
appointment will be until April 30, 1992; with a possibility of
renewal, subject to financial approval. Salary range: $2,769 to
$3,461 per month, dependent on qualifications.
