Mount Shasta, California, long revered by Native Americans has been
threatened by massive ski resort and condominium development ever since
the US Forest Service began promoting downhill skiing over ten years
ago. A large three-village complex has been proposed on adjacent
private land at timberline to which Carl Martin, a twenty-year former
employee of the Forest Service, holds an option until July 1999. Plans
include skiing for 5,000, condominiums, hotels, a golf course, a lake,
gondolas and an RV park. The San Francisco law firm of Heller and
Ehrman will be representing Native Americans and Save Mount Shasta.
Endorsements are being sought for designating Mount Shasta as a National
Monument, historic landmark, world heritge site and biosphere reserve.
