A quick reference on Columbus & co, especially vis-a-via native people of
the Americas, is Todorov's THE CONQUEST OF AMERICA. It will have, among
other things, "chapter and verse" references to CC...

[ I'd like to add that Todorov's book is one of those highly recommended
by Prof. John Mohawk (SUNY/Buffalo), who I've mentioned here a number
of times. I'll post his reading list here one of these days. Others
(from my notes of the talk he gave at the "From the Arctic to Amazonia"
conference in September, 1989) are:

_The_White_Man's_Indian_ (Berthoffer)
_Ecological_Imperialism_ (Alfred Compton - ??)
_The_Pursuit_of_Power_ (McNeil or MacNeil ??)
_Orientalism_ (Edward Said)

and, in another talk he gave, I seem to recall the title _The_Early_
_Spanish_Main_ (Karl Sauer?). These should keep you busy on those
cold winter nights coming up! :-) --Gary ]
