ALyce-
Here's some info from Frederick Hodge's HANDBOOK OF AMERICAN INDIANS
NORTH OF MEXICO, from the Bureau of American Ethnology, 1907. This is a
general encyclopedia of almost anything that the anthros knew about Indians
at the turn of the century, and is particularly valuable for cross references
of names. Here's what I found in Hodge:

MERRIC - A small ALgonquian tribe or division formerly inhabiting
the s. coast of Queens co., Long Island, N.Y., from Rockaway to South Oyster
Bay. Their name survives in the hamlet of Merricks, which is on the site
of their principal village. OTHER NAMES: Marricoke, Meracock, Mericock,
Mericoke, Merikoke, Meroke, Merriack, Merric, Merricoke (Note this list
includes your other request, "Meroke".

MATTINACOOK (Not quite your "Mattinecock") - A band of the
Penobscot who, in 1876, occupied Mattinacook id., in Penobscot r., near
Lincoln, Penobscot co., Maine. OTHER NAMES: Mattanawcook
However, there is an entry for a people called MATTITUCK, who might
be who you are looking for: MATTITUCK - (Matuh'tugh, 'place without wood',
or 'badly wooded' - Trumbull). A Corchaug village, about 1640, on the site
of present Mattituck, Suffolk co., Ong Island, N.Y. OTHER NAMES: Mattatock,
Mattatuck, Mattetuck.

ROCKAWAY - (Renape: regawihaki, 'sandy land'. - Gerard) A tribe
formerly living about present Rockaway and Hempstead, on the s. coast of Long
Island, NY. They were scattered over the plains and extended northwest to
Newton. Their principal village was Rechquaakie, besides which they had
another on Hog Island, in Rockaway Bay. OTHER NAMES: Rackeaway, Rechkewick,
Rechouwhacky, Rechowacky, Reckkeweck, Reckkouwacky, Reckomacki, Reckonhacky,
Reckowacky, Roakaway, Rockeway, Rockway.

Finally, you might want to contact Michelle Leonard at the Council of
Three Rivers American Indian Center in Pittsburgh (412-782-4457). She is
a Shinnecock from Long Island and whose family has been there for generations.
Hope this helps! -- Lisa Mitten
