November 23 - 24, 1991
Hunter College, Manhattan, New York City
A conference presented by Media Network and the Hunter College
Department of Communications.
RePackaging Paradise will view the upcoming quincentennial
celebration as the latest in a long series of media
misrepresentations of "America." It will examine depictions of
American from the original European conquest to the present. The
conference will emphasize the multiplicity of voices that are
redefining American by creating their own media images. Finally,
RePackaging Paradise will create a forum where educators, community
organizers and activist media producers will discuss strategies for
using film, video, and radio in multicultural curricula, community
education, and the building of a new America.
The conference will feature panels, workshops, and
screenings.
Keynote address: bell hooks
Other speakers will include Richard Fung, Jackie Shearer, Elia
Suleiman and Ela Troyano; Peggy Berryhill (Radio Smithsonian); Tomas
Ybarra-Frausto (Rockefeller Foundation); actress Danitra Vance; and
journalist Robert Allen Warrior.
Registration is $40 (discounts for members), and there are a limited
number of places; pre-registration is encouraged.
