Last week there were three developments in the James Bay
Hydro-Electric Project, in which thousands of Cree will be displaced
by a mega hydro-electric project in Quebec.
First, the United Nations condemned the project.
Second, the Liberal Party of New York State urged cancellation of the
Cuomo-supported New York Power Authority's contracts with Hydro
Quebec.
In a report produced by William B. Hoyt, the Chairman of the New York
State Assembly Energy Committee, the Party says 7,000 megawatts of
electricity could be saved through cogeneration alone (a process which
uses steam from conventional power stations) This compares with a
total of only 1,800 megawatts contracted for from James Bay.
Thirdly, New York State Gas and Electric announced that they will have
a surplus capacity of about 1,100 megawatts through much of the
decade and some surplus likely through 2008. They encourage Con Ed to
tap into this surplus.
