Supporters of James Bay II raise the spectre of English canada stealing
66% of Quebec's land mass in the name of Indian sovereignty; that canard
can be seen for what it is if such 66% went to an independent, non-canadian,
non-quebecois sovereign First Nation; I don't think those who have glibly
referred to Indians as "les sauvages" and "losers", respectively, in very
recent memory have such an outcome in mind.

If Quebec is so high-minded, why not propose this unilaterally?
I thought not... unfortunately, Quebecois "progressivism" often masks
the chagrin at having been number two in the European
commandeering of North America, and simply seems "progressive" because
it opposes the status quo.

Incidentally, Manitoba, cited as "worse than Quebec," in the matter of
native rights (somewhat dubiously, I fear) is the most bi-cultural and
bilingual in French/English... which doesn't make the point that the
writer seems to have wanted to make for French enlightenment. I dunno,
students of European history, who was more enlightened, Hitler or Himmler?
