ANNOUNCEMENT

ECO ITTO (INTERNATIONAL TROPICAL TIMBER ORGANIZATION): TROPICAL
TIMBER NEWSPAPER BY ELECTRONIC MAIL

ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS AVAILABLE DIRECT FROM THE ELEVENTH SESSION OF
THE INTERNATIONAL TROPICAL TIMBER COUNCIL AND NINTH SESSION OF THE
PERMANENT COMMITTEES,
YOKOHAMA, JAPAN 28 NOVEMBER - 6 DECEMBER 1991

Journalists, scientists and others - if you respond to this
message you can receive stories from the ECO newspaper direct from
the ITTO Conference.

Funded by JATAN, WWF International, and other NGOs, JATAN
(Japanese Tropical Forest Action Network) will produce overnight
ca. every two days 4-8 page desk-top published issues of the ECO
newspaper during the negotiations.

Already available in hard copy to delegates at the last ITTO
Conferences, this time ECO will also be available by e-mail as
prepared stories, on the night of publication - local time ca.
midnight (minus 9 hours for GMT) (i.e. before delegates and
journalists receive it at the sessions).

At previous sessions ECO has broken news stories such as shifts in
government positions on timber trading policy, sustainability of
timber extraction targets, political deals made during the talks
and denunciation of corrupt politicians.

ECO is funded by NGOs, not governments. It is among others written
by NGO lobbyists working as observers at the sessions. Subjects
include: Sarawak, ITTO's Year 2000 Target, and the Chimanes
conflict in Bolivia (loggers vs. indigenous peoples).

The Yokohama meeting (to be held at the ITTO headquarters: 5F
International Organizations Center, Pacifico Yokohama, 1-1, Minato
Mirai, Nishi-ku, Yokohama 220, Japan, Tel: +81 45 223 1110, Fax:
+81 45 223 1111, Tlx: 3822480 ITTO J) aims to review progress
towards the Year 2000 Target and to review and decide on funding
of project proposals.

Via the APC networks, electronic mail, or direct to the contact
numbers listed below, you will be able to respond, contribute or
request full text information.

NGOs present at the Yokohama talks can be contacted for
information/news reaction at the NGO Room (location not yet
finalized).

ECO will be available on the APC network conference:

"rainfor.timber" posted by cdp:chriselliott at about midnight
(Japan).

Tentative Schedule: Issues on Nov. 29, Dec. 2, 4.
