The reason James Bay has been a focus for action in NY is because it is
the NY State Power Authority that would be the largest customer for power
from the HQ project. It has nothing to do with Quebec nationalism, which
I personally support. It has to do with opposition to the wasteful,
energy-profligate, environmentally-disastrous lifestyle the power companies
(US and international) and energy industry would have US people live -- and
which all too many of us eagerly embrace.
As far as I know, New Yorkers aren't directly involved in oppressing people
(Native or otherwise) in Manitoba.
You are totally correct that the US has a much worse history towards its
aboriginal residents than Canada, especially Quebec. But that's not a
reason to continue that history. Our standard for judging human rights
should be an ideal, not a counter-example. We should strive to be better
than the best, not just not as bad as the worst. I don't understand how
Manitoba (or the U.S.'s) bad treatment of Native people can justify
Quebec (or anyone else) moving in the same direction.
Your statements about mercury directly contradict other information I have
seen, including the excerpt from Audubon Magazine I posted in gen.nativenet.
Again, just because there are other examples of mercury poisoning doesn't
justify doing it once more.
I'd be interested in your reasons FOR the James Bay project -- not just your
arguments against the opponents of the project. You seem awfully defensive
about something, no?
