I have no strong feelings about the subject, except to note that there
might be some confusion, given that many people may become confused by
the name, given the potential ambiguity of the term "Indian American."
(Actually, the newsgroup name is based on a hierarchical concept, so
the idea is that the newsgroup "soc.culture.indian" is for talking about
Indian (the country and its people) issues generally, and the ".american"
subgroup is for discussing people from India now living in America.
I guess the only reason this whole subject might be thought to be germane
to our concerns is that the subject has come up from time to time about
having a Usenet newsgroup in one of the mainstream Usenet hierarchies
(like "soc.") to carry NativeNet material. (If anyone has a special
interest in helping with such a project, please contact David Williams
at "williams@hulaw1.harvard.edu." David has volunteered to coordinate
this project.) [Yes, I know about "alt.native" - but it doesn't really
count, since "alt." is not a mainstream hierarchy.]
Thanks to Patt Bromberger for alerting me to this development.
