There is a nice write-up on Medha Patkar in The Hindu of 25 Nov 1991.

According to the article, she had been arrested by the Madhya Pradesh
police who were prepared to release her on her own cognizance but
Medha Patkar refused to leave the jail unless her release was un-
conditional. She was eventually let go. The last word was that she
would receive the award in person. An associate of her has been
detained, however, on the same trumped-charges.
Hopefully this award is a shot in the arm for Narmada Bachao Andholan.
God knows we do need more activist heros like Medha Patkar.
