Out here in California, I personally have never heard the term "Indian
Americans ..... people from India are either referred to as East Indians or
Indians from India -- with such a high population of Native Americans, and
lots of Engineering types from India, we take special precautions not to
confuse the two. The other "popular" term is too obvious: People from
India. Simple, direct, to the point. Where did the term Indian American
come from I wonder? Americans from India I've heard, in reference to
naturalized people from India, but not the other ...
