I just have a quick comment to make on this. If I want to learn about
the spiritual beliefs of a culture, I'll go to that group and learn it
from the people who know. Since I'm unlikely to know the credentials
of a book's author in this matter, I'd take what they say with a grain
of salt. It's really no different than my approach to taking courses
here in grad school. When I want to learn statistics, I go to the
stats department, for linguistics I go to the ling. department. This
in spite of the fact that there are courses on these things in my own
anthro dept. And this spring I'll take a course on Hodenosaunee
history from John Mohawk, even though I could do it as independent
readings. None of these courses count towards my credit requirements
(I think), but I feel I get a better understanding of the matterial.
Does that make sense on this topic?
