REQUEST FOR CREE INTERPRETER DELAYS SETTING ARSON TRIAL DATE

Journal Staff
Peace River

Setting of trial dates for eight accused in a 1990 arson case has been put
over to Feb. 3 in Peace River provincial court.

The eight, all members of the Lubicon Indian Band, along with five others,
are charged with arson that destroyed $25,000 worth of equipment in
November 1990 at a Buchanan Lumber logging camp near High Prairie, 270 km
northwest of Edmonton. The logging company is under contract to the
Daishowa pulp mill in Peace River.

A trial date was to be set in Court of Queen's Bench Tuesday for the eight
but that was postponed when defence counsel asked the court to provide a
Cree interpreter.

Proceedings have been delayed by numerous legal challenges at the
preliminary hearings, held last December.
