URGENT ACTION UPDATE. HONDURAS: LA MOSQUITIA
The fate of the largest contiguous forest in Central America should be
known next week. Tomorrow (Jan. 31), the Honduran National Congress
begins reviewing a preliminary agreement to let Chicago-based Stone
Container Corporation log at least 2.5 million acres of La Mosquitia forest
over the next 40 years. A vote is expected Wednesday (Feb. 5).
We need your immediate help to prevent the proposed cultural and
environmental exploitation of The Mosquito Coast:
1. Get media coverage, especially newspapers. It's the best way of showing
international concern for the Honduran people and forests. Articles should
be faxed to the Honduran environmental group, Fundacion Cuero y Salado
at 011 (504) 4302-07 so they can show Honduras what the world thinks.
See press release on rainfor.general, topic 166.
2. Write to the Honduran Congress and get your government officials to do
the same. Fax letters to Rodolfo Irias Navas, presidente del Congreso
Nacional de Honduras at 011 (504) 22-62-49. Also, please fax a copy of the
letter to Fundacion Cuero y Salado so Honduras can see international
concern.
3. Donate to Honduran environmental groups such as Fundacion Cuero y
Salado. They need money to get media time in Honduras, before it's too
late.
Thank you. For more information, contact Pam Wellner of the
Rainforest Action Network at (415) 398-4404.
