Please refer to the New York Times obituary of Gregory Markopoulos, kindly provided by Mr. Highwater's publishing agency, which definitively establishes the separate identities of Markopoulos and Highwater, contrary to the claim referred to in this posting to NATIVE-L. This obituary proves that the article that appeared in Akwesasne Notes, late summer, 1984, written by Hank Adams comes to incorrect conclusions concerning Mr. Highwater having been born Gregory Markopoulos and later re-inventing himself.

Holy shit, and I've been using Highwater's THE SUN, HE DIES (until it
went out of print) as an Indigenous view of the Spanish conquest in
one of my classes. Could some one PLEASE send me more info on this,
esp. a more complete citation of Adams' article.

On another note, Jerry Thomas has just released Hitchita! The
Documented Story fo the Gregg Sevier Homicide (a Native American here
in Lawrence who the cops killed last year). It is available for $22
from Peer Press, PO BOX 2087, Pahoa, Hawaii 96778. It you happen to
be in Lawrence, Kansas pick it up from Native Creations--they are
donating the entire $22 to the Gregg Sevier Memorial Fund.
