Please refer to the New York Times obituary of Gregory Markopoulos, kindly provided by Mr. Highwater's publishing agency, which definitively establishes the separate identities of Markopoulos and Highwater, contrary to the claim referred to in this posting to NATIVE-L. This obituary proves that the article that appeared in Akwesasne Notes, late summer, 1984, written by Hank Adams comes to incorrect conclusions concerning Mr. Highwater having been born Gregory Markopoulos and later re-inventing himself.

The AKWESASNE NOTES story by Hank Adams (a highly respected fishing rights
activist from the NW Coast - and not a glory-seeker by any means) covers
much of the information that Lee has posted, but obviously makes differnt
conclusions. Hank Adams asserts that J.Marks-Gregory Markopulos-Jamake
Highwater are one and the same - and the accompanying photographs of each
of these people leaves no doubt that they are the same guy, unless the
photographs are mislabled. Adams discusses Marks' devotion to Greek
mythology and philosophy, and how he built that into his book THE PRIMAL
MIND. There apparently was even a lawsuit filed with the DC Attorney
General, and involved PBS and its documentary based on the book.
I hope Lee tracks down the details - apparently this guy was a
Cherokee before he discovered his Blackfoot birthplace.
