A CELEBRATION OF OUR SURVIVAL
By Rose Robinson (Hopi)
Convener, Episcopal Urban Ministry
of Washington, DC Metropolitan Area
To Celebrate Our Survival
At 11 A.M., on October 12, 1992, the national Episcopal community will
gather in the nave of the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul - the National
Cathedral - in Washington, D.C. to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the
survival of indigenous cultures and peoples of America.
This significant observance is being sponsored by the Metropolitan
Washington, D.C. Episcopal Urban Indian Caucus (MWEUIC) and the
Episcopal Council on Indian Ministry in cooperation with the National
Cathedral, the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, and St. Patrick's
Episcopal Church, of Washington.
Planned as a national event in a year when the major focus of the nation
will be the observance of the Columbus Quincentenary, the celebration
will be a statement to the world by the American Indian and Alaska Native
peoples on the meaning to them of this anniversary.
Invitations are being extended to the ecumenical Christian Indian
community and to the leadership of Native American tribes and
organizations, as well as to the leaders of indigenous peoples in Canada,
Mexico, and Central and South America to join this celebratory event.
Concelebrants will be the Most Reverend Edmond L. Browning, Presiding
Bishop; the Right Reverend Ronald Haines, Bishop of Washington; the
Right Reverend Steven T. Plummer (Navajo), Bishop of Navajoland; and
the Right Reverend William C. Wantland (Seminole), Bishop of Eau Claire.
The Preacher will be the Right Reverend Steve Charleston (Choctaw),
Bishop of Alaska.
A special liturgy for October 12, 1992, is being written for the celebratory
service that will also include music by an all-Indian choir.
All planning is being conducted by the MWEUIC and St. Patrick's Episcopal
Church in coooperation with the National Cathedral staff. Address inquiries
