Metacom/Sassamon map

While we're on the subject of Wampanoag claims, I wonder if someone on this
list could help me with a problem I have been working on. I'm doing research
for the Inuit and Indian Maps Exhibition Project (based at U.Wisc.-Milwaukee),
which will be a national facsimile exhibition of native cartography from
within North America. One of the maps in the exhibition documents a land sale
from 1666 between Metacom and Plymouth Colony. Although the transaction is
Metacom's, the drawing of the map is attributed to his secretary John Sassamon.
The land portrayed in the drawing is believed to be in the area of Rochester
and Mattapoisett, MA. No one, it seems, can place it more specifically than
this. There are eleven Wampanoag placenames on the map. Is there anyone who
knows the original names of places in that area, or who speaks Wampanoag on
this list? (I just started working on this and haven't approached the
Wampanoag community).

(Gary--this might be more appropriate for the language list?)

[ I'll send a copy to the language list. --Gary ]
